Eucalyptus oil is the generic name fordistilled oil from the leaf of Eucalyptus, a genus ofthe plant family Myrtaceaenative to Australia andcultivated worldwide. Eucalyptus oil has a history of wideapplication, as a pharmaceutical, antiseptic,  repellent, flavouring, fragrance and industrial uses. The leaves ofselected Eucalyptus species are steamdistilled to extract eucalyptus oil.

 

The health benefits of eucalyptus oil can beattributed to its anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, decongestant,deodorant, antiseptic, antibacterial, stimulating, and othermedicinal properties. Eucalyptus essential oil iscolorless and has a distinct taste and odor.

 

Eucalyptus essential oil is obtained from fresh leavesof the tall evergreen eucalyptus tree. The tree, whichhas the botanical name Eucalyptus Globulus is also knownas fever tree, blue gum tree or stringy bark tree.Eucalyptus is native to Australia and has spread in thepast few centuries to other parts of the worldincluding India, Europe and South Africa. Though manycountries produce eucalyptus oil in small quantities, theprime source ofeucalyptus oil for the worldis Australia.

Medicinaland antiseptic The cineole-based oil is used ascomponent in pharmaceutical preparations to relieve the symptomsof influenza and colds, in productslikecough sweets,  lozenges, ointments and inhalants. Inhaled eucalyptus oilvapor is a decongestant and treatmentfor bronchitis. 

Eucalyptus oil alsohas anti-inflammatory and analgesic qualitiesas a topically applied liniment ingredient.

Eucalyptus oil is also used in personal hygiene productsfor antimicrobial properties in dentalcare and soaps. It can also be applied towounds toprevent infection.

Repellent andbiopesticide Thecineole based oils can also be used as an insectrepellent and biopesticide. 

 Flavouring Eucalyptusoil is used in flavouring. Cineole based eucalyptus oil isused as a flavouring at low levels (0.002%) in various products,includingbaked goods,  confectionery,  meat productsand beverages.  Non-cineole peppermint gum, strawberry gum and lemon ironbark are alsoused as flavouring.

Fragrance Eucalyptusoil is also used as a fragrance component to impart afresh and clean aroma in soaps,  detergents, lotionsand perfumes.

Eucalyptus oil should not be confused with the term "eucalyptol",another name for cineole.
